Will It All Actually Go Together? The Question Behind Every Renovation

July 2026 | Serenity Interior Design | Fox Cities, WI

If you’re planning a renovation, there’s a worry that usually shows up before you’ve picked a single tile. And it’s not really about the tile. It’s this…..

“Will it all actually go together when it’s done?”

I hear a version of this in almost every home I walk into.

One homeowner said it to me so plainly I’ve never forgotten it. She told me she was worried it wouldn’t look good once everything was installed, and that the new space wouldn’t match the rest of her home. That fear is so common because it’s so reasonable. You’re making a dozen decisions, in a dozen different showrooms, weeks apart. And you’re being asked to trust that the flooring you fell for in April is going to get along with the countertop you choose in June.

Here’s what I want you to know. That part is my job, not yours.

When I design a home, I’m not picking pretty things one at a time and hoping they add up. I’m watching how every choice talks to the one next to it. There’s a little rule I come back to constantly: the more you repeat a shape, a material, or a tone, the more a space feels like it belongs together. A wood vanity in the bathroom can pick up the wood on a shelf in the kitchen. A countertop can carry from one room into the next so your eye never hits a hard stop. Even something as small as choosing brushed nickel, which is timeless and just holds up over the years, keeps the whole home speaking the same language.

A lot of cohesion is also knowing what not to do.

I don’t like to switch flooring colors halfway through a home, because that’s the moment a house starts to feel chopped up instead of connected. I lean toward classic anchors for the pieces you’ll live with the longest, and then we have fun with the trendy little touches in the spots that are easy to change later. That balance is how a home feels current today and still feels right in fifteen years.

This is also why I pre-select materials, bring real samples into your actual space, and put together 3D and AI renderings before anything is ordered. You shouldn’t have to assemble the whole picture in your head and just hope. You get to see it come together first.

So if you’re at the start of a renovation and already feeling that quiet worry that it won’t all match, I get it. It’s the most normal feeling in the world. It’s also the exact reason I love coming in early, ideally right when your contractor does or even before, so cohesion is built into the plan from day one instead of something we’re chasing at the end. That’s how you get to make these decisions without all the overwhelm.

Trust the process. It really does come together.

"Brittany is the most talented designer! She can bring any space to life! After moving in to our first house, we needed help. After talking with Brittany, she made us feel like we were in good hands. She listened to the basics of what we were going for, added her touch and did not disappoint! From bedrooms, to bathrooms and every space in between - she transformed our house from basic to a beautiful place we called home! We since sold our first home (which I should include - it sold in 4 days!) & moved into our second and guess who we called! Of course we called Brittany! If you’re looking for some help transforming your space or prepping your home to sell, she’s worth the call!"
