December 2025 Blog Post | Serenity Interior Design | Greenville, WI
Every year, the design world refreshes itself — some trends evolve beautifully, and others… well, it’s time to let them go. As a designer, I spend a lot of time walking clients through what will truly stand the test of time versus what might feel dated in just a year or two.
So if you’re planning a remodel or thinking about refreshing your home in 2026, here are a few trends we’re happily leaving behind (and why your future self will thank you for it).
1. Gray Overload
For years, grey dominated everything. Grey floors, grey walls, grey cabinets, grey furniture… it was everywhere.
But 2026 is all about warmth, character, and depth. Oversaturated grey makes a home feel flat and cold — and clients are craving cozy, grounded spaces again.
Warm neutrals, richer wood tones, layered textures, and soft color? Yes, please.

2. All-White Kitchens
All-white kitchens will always have a place in design — they’re clean, bright, and timeless when done well.
But the stark, sterile white-on-white look is fading out fast.
Today’s homeowners want kitchens that feel lived-in and welcoming, not like a clinical workspace. Expect to see more warmth: organic woods, soft color, mixed materials, veining, texture, and lighting that adds soul back into the space.

3. Completely Open-Concept Everything
Open concept had its moment, and for some families, it still works beautifully.
But the “knock down every wall” era is coming to an end.
People want defined spaces again: a cozy living room, a quiet work area, a dining zone that doesn’t feel like it’s floating in the middle of the house. It’s all about balance — openness with intention.

4. Generic Builder-Grade Lighting
Lighting is one of the biggest mood-setters in your home, and those outdated flush mounts and basic pendants simply aren’t cutting it anymore.
2026 is all about:
- Warm bulbs
- Layered lighting
- Fixtures with texture & character
- Good proportions
- Thoughtful placement
Good lighting can take a room from “meh” to magazine worthy.

5. Matching Furniture Sets
The full matching bedroom set or living room suite is officially outdated.
Homes look richer and more lived-in when furniture is mixed intentionally — not bought from the same aisle all at once. Think different textures, silhouettes, finishes, and materials working together to create a curated, collected look.
This is where a designer can really bring your style to life in a way that feels natural and elevated.

So… What Should You Do Instead?
If your home feels cold, flat, or outdated, don’t stress — small changes can make a world of difference. Mixing textures, warming up your palette, adding thoughtful lighting, and creating more defined zones can instantly breathe life back into a space.
And if you’re planning a remodel? Even better. You get to build something timeless from the start.
This is exactly where I come in.
At Serenity Interior Design, I help you create a home that feels warm, functional, stylish, and tailored to your life — not the trends. From clear design plans to contractor coordination and all the details in between, I take the overwhelm off your plate so the process actually feels exciting.
